Today feels like a MIY (make it yourself) kind of day; a day for rolling up your sleeves, jumping into the kitchen and making something you usually buy from the supermarket, yourself.
It’s the sort of day that says “make your own spice mix”. Well… it did for me, anyway.
And that is the recipe I have for you today, an I-made-it-myself-from-scratch curry powder. Cue the gasps of awe and wonder….
Now, before the thoughts of “made it myself” and “from scratch” send you scurrying from this page in a flurry of mouse clicks, or screen swipes, let me just assure you by saying this is not a complicated make-it-yourself task.
This is not like, say, making your own bread (which is awesome but can feel daunting, if not downright scary, at times) or tomato sauce or pasta or anything else like that. No, all those things take time, patience, and a certain level of “skill”.
But not this recipe.
This curry powder recipe is simple. Really simple. A chimpanzee would find it simple.
This recipe is so simple that it only has a single direction (to be found below) which reads “mix all ingredients together”
That’s it. Mix together seven readily found ingredients (you never know, some of them, perhaps even all of them, may be found in your kitchen, like, right now!) and you have yourself just over 1/2 cup (it filled a 150ml container) of curry powder which = 7.5 tablespoons which = 30 teaspoons which = more than enough fragrant, ever so tingly curry powder to add flavour, and a little heat, to your meals for quite some time.
All accomplished in 5 minutes or less…. Score!
Making your own spice blends can be a lot of fun but, along with lengthy lists of ingredients, the process of roasting, cooling, grinding and blending spices can sometimes feel like, do I have to?!?!?!?
I get that. Even the most enthusiastic of make-it-yourself home cooks (⭐️ →→like me←←⭐️) can have our off days where the thought of making a full spice blend, from scratch, doesn’t feel half as exciting as, say, catching up with House of Cards (two more weeks until season 4 is released, just so you know) or any other Neftlix show.
But that is what is great about this Curry Powder blend: no baking, cooling or grinding of any spices. NONE AT ALL!
This recipe calls for spices that have already been roasted and ground for you; so making this spice blend is not only quick and easy, it is also nothing more than popping the lids off a few spice jars and Voila!!!!
And so, in the theme of quick and easy I may just leave things there. I can watch more Netflix and you can go and make yourself a batch of homemade curry powder because, as I am sure you have already figured out, I will have another recipe this week in which you can use your MIY brilliance!
But before I do go: a quick word about the Fenugreek Seeds. Although an obscure ingredient it is not unusual for large supermarkets to have it in their spice section so make sure you give your local supermarket shelves a good searching. If not, you are sure to find it in most Asian groceries.
If, however, you cannot possibly find Fenugreek seeds – and you have searched EVERY single food related store in your city – then you can use yellow mustard seeds as an alternative (and those you will have to grind yourself, Mwah Ha Ha!). It will make a slight difference to the curry powder but will certainly suffice if Fenugreek seeds are unavailable.
